Certainly this race wasn’t expected in my calendar. But my teammates convinced me to do it. After all it was for a good cause, where all the proceeds of the race were for the Hungtinton’s Disease research fund to find a cure and it was the USAT Florida Region Club Championship.
I think this is the first year the USAT decided to do a Club Championship, so the team was very pump up to race against the other strong teams in Miami. The points counted as follows:
1st place: 5 points
2nd place: 4 points
3rd place: 3 points
4th place: 2 points
5th place and finishers: 1 point
So we needed not only the beasts (aka fast people) to race, but as much athletes to win this thing!
Anyway back to the actual race. The course is similar as the popular Miami Man course of November. The only difference is that they have a sprint option, and the course doesn’t go inside the Zoo Miami. Now, we assemble a strong roster of athletes, so this shit was ON!
I had a good swim, it was a little hard to get into the water in the wave. There were some little rocks in the water that made it hard to get in. So when I was in the water, the front pack was already in front by far. It didn’t helped either that I didn’t have time to properly warm up in the water (I noticed that warming up in the water helps me A LOT on swim starts). Got into my zone, but I saw a lot of people in front of me… it was not a good sign.
Didn’t care and just did the best I could. Coming off T1 was a bit problematic since there are little rocks on the mounting area… and I always run sans-shoes. Ouch-ouch! The bike course was pancake flat, but it was windy. I hammered in order to break my legs. I think this was the best effort I had put on the bike. I passed some people but I wanted to catch the main pack. As I was closing in to the turnaround the main pack was already returning. It was a lot of people and I was already starting to being winded. On the way back I had some tailwind and placed turbo.
Caught few people but still I couldn’t catch the front pack. All of the sudden Sebas and Bernie caught me on the final miles of the bike. They started the wave after me, this gives the the idea of 1.- I’m a slowpoke and 2.- they are freaking fast.
Speedy T2 and on to the chase. Bernie was way ahead already but started the run with Sebas. We ran together for a bit, and I told him: “What the hell are you doing!? You run faster than me!, don’t worry about me and GO AHEAD!!!”. So he picked up the pace and ran away. I was left alone with my slowpokeness and continued the chase. Close again to the turn around and saw the people coming back. I needed to pick up the pace! But I was already pushing hard!!!
Some people passed me (as always) but finally made it to the finish line. The field in my age group was small, but it was FIERCE! Made to 4th place, granting 2 points for my team and the pursue of the championship.
4th of 8th
As the race finished, and all my teammates exchanged results, we certainly could make it to the top clubs. From 23 members that raced, 16 of us made it to the podium and 4 won the top spot. After the podiums were awarded, finally the club winners were announced. So from 16 teams that participated, and by a close count, my team Tri2One, won the BEST CLUB OVERALL! We beat everyone and we are officially the Best Triathlon Club in Florida! Definitely it was something won and not given! I think I saw my coach cry a little haha! I was so happy for being able to cooperate with some points for this award! It just shows that together we are strong and we race as one!
