“It is your destiny.” I always have had this kind of thoughts around my mind, and since I was little, some of my closest friends will always tell me: “You’re the chosen one”. But the chosen one to do WHAT?... Do I have to bring balance to The Force?, or lead the human resistance against the machines?, or just destroy Voldermort? or defeat the evil guy and save the hot blonde princess? (actually this wouldn't be bad!)
Is silly to think that I have been maybe destined to do something, even thought I don’t know what. This week it got pretty clear that I have the opportunity to do something that very few skilled people in the World have the chance to and mere humans just dream off.
The Ironman World Championship, is the biggest event in the sport of triathlon. Many people dream to be there with the greatest athletes in the sport. Around 80,000 worldwide try to qualify for this event. There are only 3 ways to get in: by earning a qualifying slot at one of the qualifying events held worldwide, by winning a slot through the Ironman’s charitable eBay Auction or by being selected in the Ironman Lottery Program.
The Official qualifying events award Ironman World Championship slots to their top age-group finishers. Qualifying races are one of two distances: 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run or 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run.
The annual auction with eBay is designed to benefit a variety of charitable organizations worldwide. Through the eBay auction, the Ironman Foundation has raised more than $2,000,000 USD since its inception in 2003.
The Lottery system gives a chance to normal humans to be in the “World Cup” of triathlons. The lottery will select 100 general Age Group athletes, 100 Legacy athletes plus five Physically Challenged athletes. You pay a ticket fee of $40 to enter the lottery and you wait until they announce the winners on April 15.
On April 15, 2012 at 12pm, Ironman announced the Kona Lottery winners. From almost 10,000 people that apply yearly worldwide, I was lucky enough to be selected within the 100 Age Group athletes.
Yes! I’m going to
the 2012 Ironman
(CAN SOMEONE PLEASE SLAP ME TO WAKE UP OR SOMETHING!!! I WAS FREAKIN SELECTED FROM 10,000 PEOPLE AROUND THE GLOBE TO RACE WITH THE BEST ATHLETES IN THE WORLD!!!! IT’S UNREAL!!!! IT’S AMAZING!!!! I'M GOING TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK!!!!, (but let me eat a cookie first!) AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!)
Ahem!, sorry… back to normal, heh, heh.... But yes, I cannot believe it yet. This has been my second year applying for the Kona Lottery, and always thinking that “well, maybe I will get a chance in 10 or 20 years”. I never, EVER thought that I would be selected in my 3rd year as a triathlete and after just recently doing my first Ironman. Speechless and with almost a heart attack in the making, I will be going to Kona.
To think that many people apply for this, that many people are even more suitable and faster than me, more worthy than me, and still getting that chance of luck and getting into a race that is a World Championship... for me this doesn't even make sense!
It was 12:03pm, and I had just finished cleaning Lightning. Without any expectation, I said, "well... let's see the list of winners". After reading the announcement (click here to go there!), it seem that I saw my name within the last 12 people. I was like... "what?, wait hold on..." First, I refreshed my browser; second I doubled/tripled checked my name and age/state; third I went to the top of the page and did a search in the browser with my name to see if it highlighted. All of the sudden my friend David, from Bragging Rights post on my Facebook wall saying "DUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!!!!". Then I realised it was really me, I was the chosen one. Then all my Facebook collapsed with congratulations and excitement, received several calls from my friends and we always ended shouting like teenage school girls in a rock concert. I was shaking, shouting and barely could talk.
But I needed to be sure it was me. Why I haven't received an email confirming my spot? Twitter solved my issue.
Expectation, expectation... after biting my nails and crawling the wall of my cave like Spider-Man for two ETERNAL days after the announcement, I finally received the confirmation letter that officially invites me to the biggest event in the world of triathlon.
So my priorities from this year have taken a 180 degree turn. Rather than qualifying for Nationals, I will be training for my second Ironman race. (I never thought I would be doing an Ironman 2 years in a row.) I have been granted an opportunity of a lifetime, the golden ticket to go to the Chocolate factory! I better move my ass and start training!!! LOL!
But you know what? The 2012 Ironman World Championship is on October 13th, which is my dad's birthday. Maybe it is my destiny after all.
Enough talk!, Kona is waiting for me!
